IMFER's technology and rational use of oocytes vitrification make it possible to obtain results that were unthinkable only a few years ago.
WHAT DOES VITRIFICATION CONSIST OF? It is a technique that allows us to successfully freeze oocytes, preferably coming from women under 37 years of age. By vitrifying the eggs, their "genetic age" will remain unchanged until the day the woman decides to become a mother.
This technique will lead, in a near future, to the creation of an "egg bank", comparable to sperm banks, that have existed for decades.
The vitrification consists of using very high concentrations of cryoprotectors dehydrating the cell almost entirely.
Once the eggs have been vitrified, they are kept in liquid nitrogen at a temperature of -196 ºC. At such temperature the eggs practically have no expiration date.
When the right time comes for the woman to become a mother, the eggs are devitrified, inseminated with sperm, and the resulting embryos are transferred into her uterus within 2 or 3 days.
Thanks to this new technique 95% of the eggs survive, 60% of which generate a pregnancy, following fertilization.
This technique is advisable in many situations a woman can find herself in. Among others:
. Women who wish to delay maternity for different reasons (emotional, professional, economic...) can count on vitrification to become mothers even when their "biological clock" is saying that it is too late.
. Women with low ovarian reserve.
. Oncological patients will have a chance to vitrify their eggs before undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Following the procedure the woman can immediately resume her daily life activities.
Oocytes vitrification is a step forward in equality between men and women and therefore toward dignity of all human beings.
