When should I begin to think that we might have problems for having children?
In general, 80-85% of couples get pregnant during the first year of trying. If this is not the case, it is not very probable that it will happen spontaneously and you could think that there may be a problem.
Who usually has more problems for having children, the man or the woman?
The rate of infertility is the same for both genders. Approximately 35% is due to the man, 35% the woman and the remaining 20% due to both. At times, after a sterility study, it may be observed that there is no apparent cause for infertility in either of the partners; this is what is known as sterility of unknown origin. It occurs in approximately 10% of couples.
What possibilities of success do couples who resort to assisted reproduction clinics have?
After following the correct treatment, we can say overall that approximately 5 out of every six couples get pregnant. However, in some cases the probabilities of success are higher than in others.
And the possibility of multiple pregnancies? Why is there a high rate of multiple pregnancies?
Multiple pregnancies are quite common. We could say that approximately 1 out of every four couples that succeed in getting pregnant have twins. The rate of three or more children is, today, much less probable but very high in comparison with the general population. It is all due to the use of drugs to induce ovulation and to the transfer of more than one embryo. However, the increased performance of the various techniques reduces the possibility of pregnancy more and more.
